What early WorkCover treatment covers, and what it doesn't
GP visits, counselling or psychology sessions, psychiatry appointments and medication are covered while a claim is assessed. In-patient hospital costs are not.
WorkCover Queensland's worker-facing guidance lists what early mental health treatment, funded while a claim is still being assessed, can include: GP appointments, counselling or psychology sessions, psychiatry appointments, and medication such as antidepressants. This is the treatment available before a claim is formally accepted, provided a claim has been lodged and a work capacity certificate confirms a mental injury diagnosis.
What is explicitly excluded
The same guidance is explicit about what early treatment does not cover: in-patient hospital costs, and costs related to a hospital stay such as nursing or in-hospital medication. Someone whose situation involves hospitalisation should not assume WorkCover's early treatment funding extends that far; it is scoped to community-based mental health treatment.
No specific session limit is published
This site has not found an official WorkCover Queensland or Office of Industrial Relations source stating a specific number of sessions funded before a case-manager review is required. Claims made online about a fixed number of initial sessions are not from either regulator source and should not be relied on as an official figure; the honest answer is to ask WorkCover Queensland directly, or your treating psychologist, what has actually been approved for your claim.
