Early mental health treatment while your claim is still being assessed
You can usually access WorkCover-funded treatment while a claim is being assessed, before it is formally accepted, once you have lodged and have a work capacity certificate.
WorkCover Queensland's own worker guidance states plainly: "While your claim is being assessed, you can usually access mental health treatment funded by WorkCover." This early treatment can include GP appointments, counselling or psychology sessions, psychiatry appointments, and medication such as antidepressants. Accessing it requires having lodged a WorkCover claim and having a work capacity certificate from a doctor confirming a mental injury diagnosis.
What happens if the claim is later rejected
This is the detail that most changes how people approach the early period: WorkCover Queensland's guidance states that if the worker's mental injury claim is not accepted, WorkCover will not continue paying for their mental health treatment from that point, but "the worker doesn't have to pay these costs back." In other words, treatment received during the assessment period is not clawed back if the claim is ultimately rejected; funding simply does not continue past that point.
Why this matters for timing
Because early treatment funding depends on having already lodged a claim, waiting to lodge until you feel certain the claim will succeed delays access to funded treatment as well as running down the 6-month deadline. Lodging early, with a GP's work capacity certificate in hand, opens the door to early treatment funding regardless of how the claim is ultimately decided.
